Tiji Festival 2018 in Mustang

Our itinerary consists of total 13 days trip. In these 13 days, you will be visiting some famous cultural heritage sites in Kathmandu - Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and Swayambhunath. Then, you will be travelling to Pokhara, and then to our main destination Mustang. You will be reaching Upper Mustang during Tiji festival, which is one of the main festival in Lo Manthang. The Tiji festival will be celebrated on 12, 13 and 14 May respectively.  

 

01 Day 

Day 01: 7th May - Arrival in Kathmandu

Getting to Kathmandu is an exciting and memorable experience; the panoramic view of the snowy peaks of the Himalayas will present your views. At the airport, our staff will be waiting for your arrival. You will transfer to the hotel for check-in, rest and then visit to the cultural heritage sites in the city: You will be visiting Durbar Square in Kathmandu and walk back to Thamel, through the most authentic Indra Chowk and Ason Chowk of Kathmandu, accompanied by guide.

Overnight: Kathmandu Guest House or similar. Bed and breakfast.

02 Day 

Day 02: 8th May - Kathmandu Cultural City Tour

After having breakfast in the hotel, you will be visiting four historical and cultural places in Kathmandu - Buddhist monastery of Boudhanath, Hindu temple of Pashupatinath which is a Hindu ceremony site, Patan Durbar Square and Monkey Temple.

03Day 

Day 03: 9th May - Kathmandu To Pokhara - 210 km, 6 to 7 hours drive

After breakfast, you will drive to Pokhara, a quiet town on the shores of Lake Phewa. Pokhara is a famous tourist destination and a lovely place which offers a great view of the Mountains – Dhaulagiri (8167 m) and Annapurna 1 (8091 m) as well as sacred Machapuchre, also known as Fish Tail, and the massive Annapurna II. In the evening you can walk around the Lake Side, a small area similar to that of Kathmandu’s Thamel. Here, you will be able to find different pubs, cafes and places to chill.

04Day 

Day 04: 10th May - Pokhara to Jomsom - 9 to 10 hours 

Today, you will begin your adventure in the Jeep, and you will be heading towards Jomsom. Jomsom is located in 2800 meters altitude. It is the region’s administrative headquarters and the main hub for onward travel to Upper Mustang and Muktinath. At the south western of the town is the airport, where you will also be able to find hotels, restaurants and shops. If you have some time, you can also visit the Mustang Eco Museum which displays various aspects on Mustang culture such as traditional dress, artwork, and animal specimen.

05Day 

Day 05: 11th May - Jomsom to Ghami - 32 km - 4 hours approximately

Today, you will be driving to the village of Ghami which takes about 4 hours’ drive. Ghami is a wonderful town with a wonderful atmosphere. You can see the mud-brick style of Tibetan architecture and chortens (stupa) everywhere. This place is incredibly quiet. You can see some colorful mountains above the village as well.

06Day 

Day 06: 12th May - Ghami to Lomanthang - 26 km - 4 hours

Today, early morning, you will be heading towards Lo Mangthang which takes 4 hours by driving. Lo Mangthang is the capital and the most important village of the kingdom and lies on the border with Tibet. Once you reach the main entrance you will be seeing many chorten (stupa) in front of the entrance. Next to it lies the King’s palace. Today, after having lunch you will be participating in the opening ceremony of Tiji Festival. In evening, you will be vising the Royal Palace.

07Day 

Day 07: 13th May - Sightseeing in Lomanthang and Pariticipating in Opening Ceremony of Tiji Festival

This day will be dedicated to the exploration of area and celebration of Tiji Festival. In morning, after breakfast, you will be visiting the most important local monasteries and the possibility of horse riding to the hidden chosar cave, where Buddhist monks, over centuries, expanded a network of natural caverns to create over 150 rooms for prayer and contemplation. Along the way, you can also visit the very old and isolated village of Tingar. After exploring the area, you will come back to hotel and have some rest. Tiji festival will start after 12 pm. Thus, in the afternoon, you will be celebrating the festival.

Tiji: It is the main festival of Lo Manthang and celebrated for three days consecutively. This is a festival that is indigenous to Lo Manthang and commemorates the victory of Dhorje Sonam, an incarnation of the Buddha, over the demon called Ma Tam Ru Ta who wrecked havoc on humans in the form of storms, floods and droughts

 

08Day

Day 08: 14th May - The West of Lomanthang and Celebrating Tiji

Today, you will be exploring the west of Lo Manthang, Namgyal Gompa and the Monastery of Victory. You will be able to meet and interact with the resident monks over there, and learn about their communal lifestyle and perhaps seek some advice on Buddhist meditation and road to enlightenment. In afternoon, you will be celebrating the final day of Tiji festival again.

09Day 

Day 09: 15th May - The Village of Kagbeni

Today, you will head towards Kagbeni, village of Tibetan, packed with prayer wheels, Buddhist Stupa and monastery dating back to 500 years ago. There are fields of corn, barley and potatoes around this charming village, surrounded by buildings with two and three floors with white walls, flat roofs where firewood and hay are put to dry in the sun for the winter. You can see beautiful landscape and take photographs while mesmerizing its beauty.

10Day 

Day 10: 16th May - Kagbeni to Muktinath to Jomsom

After breakfast, you will drive towards Muktinath. One of the most important site here is the temple and monastery with its 108 fish shaped Water Fountains. It’s a destination for Hindu pilgrims paying homage from as far away as India. To Hindus, Muktinath is a sacred place of salvation. They believe that bathing in the waters here guarantees salvation after death. After having a leisure time in Muktinath, you will be heading towards Jomsom.

11Day 

Day 11: 17th May - Jomsom to Pokhara

In the morning, you will have your flight to Pokhara. The flight is about 30 minutes and is also one of the most beautiful mountain flights, since it passes between the deepest gorges wedged between the Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri I. Once you reach in Pokhara, you will have some time to perform some of the cultural visits (visit to the Tibetan refugee camp, to David waterfalls, the Peace Pagoda), take a boat trip on the lake Phewa or relax in the beautiful town.

Overnight: Hotel Barahi or similar. Bed and breakfast.

12Day 

Day 12: 18th May - Pokhara to Kathmandu

You will transfer to airport and fly back to Kathmandu. Then you will move in the beautiful town of Bhaktapur, where you will visit the famous Durbar Square and you can admire the famous palace with 55 windows built in 1754, the Sunko Dhoka and beautiful Hindu temples. 

Overnight: Kathmandu Guest House or similar. Bed and breakfast. 

13Day 

Day 13: 19th May - Return to Italy

Your safety is of paramount concern while traveling with Himalayan Trailfinder. Please note that your leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it is deemed necessary due to safety concerns. Every effort will be made to keep to the above itinerary; However, as this is adventure travel in remote mountain regions, we cannot guarantee it!
